How To Edit Your Live Streams To Post On Other Social Media

As a streamer, most of your money and content comes from live streaming

That’s most of the fun for your audience!

So if you want to use social media to advertise your live stream, you need to know how to create smaller videos and montages from your live streams

You can edit your live streams by using screen recording software and downloading the video when you are done streaming. You can record the entire stream or you can automatically record specific parts of your streams. Once you have the videos downloaded, you just need to edit it with the software

Most of the time, you cannot edit the live stream itself

Facebook is the exception to that

You can edit the post after you are done being live

But usually, live itself stays the same

If you want to use that live video for other platforms, then you just need to download the recording and edit it like you do any other video!

How do you record your live stream?

Recording your screen while you are live streaming is actually really simple

You just need to download the software!

We use Outplayed by Overwolf

Outplayed automatically captured your gameplay when the match starts, or the entire time you are live

You can also set it to capture a predetermined clip length when something happens

That way you don’t have to search all your content for a specific time

For example, you can have Outplayed record a 60-second clip before and during a headshot

And you can set a key or button to save the last 60 seconds when you push it

So if something happens that you want to be recorded separately but it doesn’t have the automatic setting, you can click a single button and save that clip

All of these options together make getting content to edit for social media really easy

You can save videos directly on Twitch as well, but it isn’t as easy and Twitch automatically deletes VODs after 60 days

How do you save those videos to your computer?

Once you have videos recorded, downloading them is very simple!

You are going to click on video archive and find the recording that you want to download

Once you find it, look on the right side for three dots

Click on those three dots to see a drop-down menu

Select “Download” from that drop-down menu

Your computer will download that clip for editing and use on our social media!

Can I edit directly on Twitch or YouTube?

While there are limited editing options on Twitch, it is best to use a third-party software for editing live streams from your Twitch or YouTube channels

You can trim your clips on both YouTube and Twitch if you need to do that, but if you want any pop-ups, transitions, or anything else…

I recommend using an actually video editor

What do I need to do to those videos so I can post them on social media?

How you edit your videos depends on what you want them to look like and what your audience wants to see

But there are some base rules to help someone that is just getting started

The first thing you need to do is decide what the video you are currently editing is going to offer

Value is important for social media

But value can look like a huge range of things

Value can be something that is entertaining

Or it can be funny

Value can also be educational

It just means that you have a clear reason why someone should watch your video

Once you have that idea, find a clip or a few clips that match that idea and download them

Add those clips to your video editor

If you don’t know what video editor to use, check out my post on 9 different options

Once the videos are in the editor, start trimming the parts that do not help your reach the value you are deciding on

Just because a part is great doesn’t mean it should be in the video

Stick with the value you decided on and create a new video for the part that you enjoyed

Trim off all the dead space and empty time that will lose viewers

If you are making a video for YouTube or similar, just trim until you are happy with the content included

If you are making a TikTok or similar, then trim until you have less than 60 seconds of content

Once you have that done, add a hook and a CTA

A hook is a statement that makes people want to see your video

Make sure you keep any promises with the value you are providing

Then add a Call To Action (CTA) at the end

This is asking your viewers to do something

You can ask them to subscribe or follow, or you can ask them to join your live stream!

That is the basics to creating a video for social media from a recording of your live!

Do I have to use the full stream recording for all my content?

You do not have to only record the full stream and dig through for clips

There are many options when you use a recorder like Outplayed

Yes, you can have it record your entire live as one video, but you can have it capture smaller clips as well

You can do this automatically by setting it to record a specified amount of time every time an event happens

For example, you can set it to record the 60 seconds before and during a headshot

That way you don’t have to search for that moment in your long video

It will automatically save as a 60-second separate video

There are many events that you can set to automatically save

This saves you a lot of time when finding clips to post on social media!

You can also set a button on your keyboard to save the specified time before you pushed the button

For example, you can have it save 60 seconds before you push the “0” key

That way if something happens that you want to post on social media, but it won’t be automatically saved, you can click that “0” key to have it record the last 60 seconds as a separate clip

You get to decide the key and the time

So that is also very time-saving!
